Possible mountain lion spotted

Watch out for kitty cats on the trails.....

With gloomy skies and temperatures in the 30s, Sunday wasn't a fit day out for man nor beast. But the weather didn't deter Houston lawyer Tina Nicholson from an afternoon run in Harris County's Terry Hershey Park. And it certainly didn't stop what Nicholson described as “a big cat” — possibly a mountain lion — from staking out a menacing spot on a bluff 20 feet above the bike trail.

Nicholson said the encounter alarmed her because the park's narrow margin of woodland along Buffalo Bayou provides little room for the carnivores to live and hide. “People bring their kids here all the time,” she said of the park, which extends from Beltway 8 to Texas 6. “Houses back up to the park. ...Dangerous interaction with people is inevitable.”

John Laine, assistant chief constable for the precinct, said his officers searched the park for signs of the animal Sunday and again Monday, but found nothing. He said his officers have received no other reports of the animal.

Texas Parks and Wildlife officials say mountain lion attacks are rare, but have increased in recent decades. A fatal Texas mountain lion encounter happened, on average, once every 6 1/2 years from 1890 to 2001.

Game Warden Capt. Albert Lynch said the presence of a mountain lion in Houston's suburbs is possible, especially if it was an escaped or abandoned pet. Late last year, his office received reports of large cats in counties surrounding Houston, but no animals were found.

“I'm not disputing that this may have taken place,” Laine said. “When you have fast development infringing on the territory of wild animals, moving them into smaller confined areas, you're going to see them. Raccoons. Bobcats. Possibly coyotes.”

Nicholson said she was only about 100 feet from the animal when she spotted it. She couldn't immediately identify it, but “it didn't look right.” The woman slowly backed down the trail until she met her husband, who had been following at a walk. Together they watched the animal for several minutes.

When a man and his dog caught up to the couple, the feline — about the size of a German shepherd — stood up and walked toward a nearby residential area.

Nicholson said the beast had big ears and an extremely long tail. “I just kept thinking, ‘That's a big cat! That's a big cat!'”

Nicholson said she later identified the animal as a mountain lion through Internet research.

Adult mountain lions can grow to about eight feet in length and weigh close to 200 pounds.

Tim Dunbar, executive director of the Sacramento, Ca.-based Mountain Lion Foundation, said Nicholson's description of the animal matches that of mountain lions.

“They are found on the urban edges more and more,” he said. “They really don't want to be associated with humans. They would watch unseen. They don't view us as prey species — they're pretty much hard-wired to eat deer — but that doesn't mean they won't react or attack.”

from staking out a menacing spot on a bluff 20 feet above the bike trail.

So was this at buffs bluff? Ha ha.

Im going searching. I knew the missing fence at squatters pass was bad news. Those kennels looked like they were built to contain more than dogs. I wouldn't be surprised if that dude bought a mountain lion and set him free because his fence was taken away.

I've seen very large Bobcats out there. Much bigger than I ever saw in Louisiana and we saw them somewhat regularly there.

Me and a friend were out for a ride a few months ago and he said he saw one (Bobcat) with a squirrel in its mouth carrying it off. I missed that one.

Years ago there were a few sightings (i never saw it) of a largeish cat (not a bobcat). We don't ride anymore in the area where those sighting happened.

The comments are good. Heres one:

I'm the one who saw this mountain lion. I happen to have lived and worked in rural areas and I know what wolves, bobcats and other wild animals look like. There was no mistaking this animal. It was a huge cat. The tail alone was four feet long. We were close and saw it clearly. My main concern is that the people who live near and use this park have not been warned. People push kids in strollers through there all day long. One of the constables admitted to me that there had been other sightings in George Bush Park, which is adjacent, and that they had seen the tracks. What he said to me was, "It seems to be moving east." I asked the constable to put up a sign or otherwise notify users of the park. Last year, I was in the Arizona mountains when there was a lion sighting and the authorities were very proactive about getting the word out. That was where I learned to back away slowly from the animal. The next person to encounter the animal may not be so lucky.

Where was the cat located? Your article says it was on a bluff near the bike path. What cross street (Eldridge? Dairy Ashford?) and what side of the bayou, North or South? I want to know so I can stear clear of its hunting grounds.

I live near the park by Wilcrest and I've seen bobcats, gators, possibly a coyote once in the park. I actually saw what I believed to be a wild hog in the neighborhood once. Nature's at our backdoor, just be careful.

Some guy named Frank jumped out of the bushes one day and demanded my wallet. I kicked him in the nuts and rode off but not before snapping a pic.

Watch out for Frank.

edit: Whos the admin around here? How come Frank isn't showing up?

I just started going to THP/GBP in the last 3 years, and I've seen hundreds of snakes, a coyote, herds of wild pigs, an alligator, rabbits, black squirrels and many deer. Oh yeah, and long horn steer. I try NEVER to ride behind the dam in the dark, but along the levee and THP, I ride in the dark all the time.
