Critters in the park

Postby nmj on Feb 23rd, 2012, 5:18 pm

I've seen plenty of animals in the park and was curious if anyone has seen anything interesting?

I saw a coyote - not the first one - this morning halfway between Kirkwood and Dairy Ashford on the north side of the trails. We got to within 20 feet of each other before he/she took off. I invariably thought it was someone's dog until I noticed it's trademark tail and how agile it was.

I've never seen a coyote nor do I want to see one. Yikkks! But I have seen a bunch of snakes and one large alligator.

At THP and GBP I have seen countless snakes, rabbits, wild pigs, an alligator, deer, amadillos, snapping turtles and a coyote. When I saw the coyote, I was riding alone, just before dusk, when it crossed about 20 feet in front of me on the paved path behind the dam. I was thrilled! I've never had any issues with wild animals out at either park. If you don't bother them, they generally won't bother you. Even the snakes will just pause to look at you, and go on their way. It's the idiots who stop to poke them with sticks that have problems.

Whaaat?!? Suzanne doesn't like to be poked?

I bet her boyfriend is frustrated ....

Speaking of critters, I've seen several quite large water moccasins and some other snakes since it warmed up. I've started carrying my camera again so I can get some good pics this year.
